Understanding The Power of Prayer and Fasting

“Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:21

Prayer and fasting is one of the greatest weapons in the kingdom for the believer. This is because prayer and fasting is our principal access to divine help. Jesus Himself, our perfect example, was a man of prayer. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.” Matthew 4:1-2

“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1

A great number of God’s children find it difficult to fast. Just as Esau lost his birthright to a morsel of bread many Christians have lost their glorious inheritances to their inability, unwillingness and lack of understanding of the place of fasting in their prayer lives. Fasting is not a religious affliction, but a spiritual weapon designed to guarantee your victory in every battle of life.

When faith is in place, coupled with prayer and fasting, there is no barrier that can stand on your way, as every barrier to the actualisation of God’s agenda for you will crash. Fasting is a spiritual catalyst in prayer; it enhances the potency of our prayers. “Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am . If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity.” Isaiah 58:9,

“Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:21

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

  • It is God’s design and command. Is not this the fast that I have chosen?” He asked the children of Israel in Isaiah 58:6 God prescribed fasting for His children to polish them, not to punish them. Every command of the Scriptures is not grievous but designed to groom us. “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous.” 1 John 5:3

Jesus shows us that fasting and prayer is part and parcel of the believer’s life. He also revealed that fasting is the covenant obligation of every believer. That is why He said, “When you fast…” He did not say “If ye fast…” Matthew 6:16-17

There is not a gift of fasting, it is a command designed to put you in command of the affairs of life. Jesus was able to heal the lunatic boy because He was in command through fasting and prayer. “And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:18-21

  • It’s a channel through which divine help comes. We see help come down for Daniel through fasting and prayer in Daniel 10. Fasting is God’s great agenda for His people. It is one of those vital forces required for you to experience a genuine turnaround by the hand of God. It is a spiritual exercise designed to loose the hand of wickedness over your life, family, destiny and business.

Benefits of Fasting

  • Fasting and prayer is a spiritual device for supernatural empowerment. “And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.” Luke 4:14 After His forty days of praying and fasting in the wilderness, we see Jesus return in the power of the Spirit into Galilee.
  • Fasting and prayer also guarantees sound health. “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.” Isaiah 58:8
  • Fasting opens channels of communication and grants you direct access to God. And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” Isaiah 58:11
  • Fasting and prayer enhances you to have access to the deep things of God.“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” 1. Cor. 2:9-10
