“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.“ Titus 2:11-12
It is noteworthy in the above-stated scripture the impact of the grace of God on our lives as believers. The Bible says “Teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.” This simply means God’s grace has come down not only for forgiveness of our sins but also to empower us to live godly lives according to the will of God. This grace empowers us to be able to deny every worldly lust and walk in the newness of life Christ has brought to us. “Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.“ Romans 6:4
It is our personal responsibility therefore to grow in the knowledge of God and allow His grace to multiply in our lives according to His will. We must aim at presenting ourselves to Him as holy brides by the multiplication of the grace of God which comes through the knowledge of Christ and living a godly life in this adulterous generation. Therefore go for the knowledge of His will. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.“ 2 Peter 1:2
What does it mean to live a godly life?
- It is to live our lives according to His will. “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.“ Matthew 7:21
- Walking in the reality of scriptures by being obedient to God’s Word. “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.“ Matthew 7:24-25
- To present our body as a living sacrifice unto God; the bible says that is our reasonable service. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.“ Romans 12:1
- To be holy as He is holy. “But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.“1 Peter1:15-16
You need an understanding for this because the Bible records that without holiness no one can see God. As Christians our ways are different from the ways of this world and if you don’t change your ways by embracing the changes Jesus brought to us through grace, you can’t please God. Therefore it is time to be godly and put aside anything that promotes filthiness and hampers holy living. “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.“ James 4:4
Even the word of God makes us understand that “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.” Romans 13:12 Friends, this is God’s will for us-that we may embrace godliness and imbibe it as a lifestyle. Remember the wages of sin is death and God has not called us to wrath.
